Canada’s wage journey Infographic: Ten years of minimum wage and its history

Minimum wage is ever increasing. In light of the 2014 minimum wage increases in several provinces and territories in Canada, we wanted to take a look back at the journey of minimum wage in our country and all of its jurisdictions.

The provinces and territories that have or are increasing minimum wage in 2014 are:

  • Nova Scotia increased the minimum wage increased for experienced employees to $10.40 per hour and for inexperienced employees to $9.90
  • The Yukon, effective April 1, 2014, the minimum wage increased to $10.72 per hour
  • Quebec, effective May 1, 2014, the general minimum wage and the minimum wage for the clothing industry will increase to $10.35 per hour.
  • Ontario is raising the minimum wage to $11.00 per hour effective June 1, 2014
  • Prince Edward Island will increase to $10.20 an hour as of June 1, 2014 & to $10.35 an hour as of October 1, 2014
  • Saskatchewan will increase the minimum wage on October 1, 2014 to $10.20 per hour
  • Newfoundland and Labrador will increase the minimum wage October 1, 2014, to $10.25 per hour. This will be followed by another increase on October 1, 2015 to $10.50
