Possibility of temporary layoffs must be included in employment contract

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice just confirmed that when an employer attempted to temporarily lay off an employee of 12 years, it actually terminated her because the temporary layoff was made without providing consideration to the employee and was not a possibility included in the employment contract.

Women consistently receive less severance than men, according to new studies

Last year saw lots of discussion of the gender wage gap in Canada, which is the difference between the earnings of women and men in the same jobs. According to numerous sources, including Statistics Canada, the gap is shrinking. With Pay Equity Acts and Human Rights Legislations and other measures in effect across the country, the difference will only continue to decrease. But a professor at the University of Victoria has uncovered another area where women in the workplace enjoy significantly lower compensation than men: severance.

Changes to first aid requirements under CLC

On December 7, 2012, the Regulations amending certain Regulations made under the Canada Labour Code were registered and came into force. The amendments aim to simplify the first aid training available to employees in the federally regulated jurisdiction by changing provisions of the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations regarding training approval, the issuance of first aid certificates and the Minister of Labour’s involvement in teaching services.
